"There is a New World Somewhere"
Written and directed by former Austinite writer/director Li Lu, the romantic drama There is a New World Somewhere follows a road trip undertaken by two strangers in search of love and acceptance. Back in her native Austin for a wedding, struggling New York artist Sylvia (The Returned’s Agnes Bruckner) enjoys a chance encounter with Esteban (Narco’s Maurice Compte), a failed musician with nothing tying him down to Texas. Esteban persuades Sylvia to join him on his drive to New York, with stops planned in New Orleans and Nashville, among other places. Sylvia’s strong attraction to Esteban gets the better of her, and she quickly abandons her friends for a road trip that promises to change her life. Ashley Bell, of The Last Exorcism and the Austin-made Love & Air Sex, costars as Sylvia’s concerned best friend. There is a New World Somewhere marks the feature-length directorial debut of the Chinese-born Li Lu, who studied at UT. There is a New World Somewhere will screen 2:20 p.m. July 16 at the Spider House Ballroom with writer/director Li Lu in attendance.
