Directed by Allison Otto, the documentary The Thief Collector chronicles the unusual story behind the 1985 theft of Willem de Kooning’s “Woman-Ochre" from the University of Arizona Museum of Art and its recovery in 2017 from the rural New Mexico home of late married couple Jerry and Rita Alter. The documentary examines if and how the otherwise unassuming globe-trotting Alters were involved an art crime that went unsolved for 32 years. The Thief Collector also includes reenactments starring Glenn Howerton. The Thief Collector will screen during the SXSW Film Festival at 6 p.m. Sunday, March 13 at the Alamo South Lamar, 2:03 p.m. and 2:33 p.m. Monday, March 14 at the Violet Crown Cinema, and 2:15 p.m. Thursday, March 17 at the Alamo South Lamar. The Thief Collector is also available for SXSW Film Festival registrants to stream online for 48 hours beginning at 9 a.m. Monday, March 14.
