Creator/writer/director Ya’Ke Smith’s web series The Beginning and Ending of Everything follows the effort of a parolee to remain a clean and led a lawful life. Played by Monica Peña, Angelita also discovers her ex-boyfriend has given up custody of their son but no one knows the child’s location. The cast also includes Josslyn Jisele Mitchell as Angelita’s no-nonsense best friend Tee and Mikala Gibson as Angelita’s sponsor Joyce. Ya’Ke Smith shot The Beginning and Ending of Everything in Arlington, where he held the position of the Morgan Woodward Distinguished Professor of Film at the University of Texas at Arlington. He is now an Associate Professor of film at the University of Texas at Austin’s Radio-Television-Film department, where he received his M.F.A. He previously directed the feature film WOLF. Two episodes of The Beginning and Ending of Everything will screen 6 p.m. Oct. 29 at the Hideout and 1 p.m. Nov. 1 at the Alamo Drafthouse Village as part of the Austin Film Festival’s “Original Series” program.
