Interview:
Mark Patton,
documentary subject,
"Scream, Queen!
My Nightmare On Elm Street"
Directed by Roman Chimienti and Tyler Jensen, the documentary Scream, Queen! My Nightmare on Elm Street offers an intimate portrait of A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge star Mark Patton. After enjoying his big break in the stage and film versions of the Robert Altman-directed Come Back to the 5 & Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean, Patton fled Hollywood when discussion of the 1985 Freddy Krueger sequel’s homoerotic subtext and themes threatened to overshadow the closeted actor’s promising career at a time when Hollywood did not cast openly gay actors in lead roles and the gay community faced a national backlash as a result of the AIDS crisis. Patton remained in seclusion for decades until he was contacted to appear in the 2010 ANightmare on Elm Street documentary Never Sleep Again: The Elm Street Legacy and realized he was now celebrated as horror’s first and most prominent male scream queens. In A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge, Patton plays Jesse, the object of Freddy Krueger’s obsession. Freddy seeks to possess Jesse in a bid to escape the confines of his potential victims’ nightmares and continue his bloody reign of terror in the real world. Scream, Queen! My Nightmare on Elm Street finds Patton on the convention circuit embracing the film that ended his acting career. The documentary also includes interviews and/conversations with Patton’s Freddy’s Revenge costars, including Robert Englund, director Jack Sholder, and screenwriter David Chaskin, who until recently denied he wrote a gay subtext into Freddy’s Revenge and attributed it to Patton’s performance and interpretation of Jesse. Scream, Queen! My Nightmare on Elm Street will screen 5 p.m. Sept. 22 and 8 p.m. Sept. 24 at the Alamo South Lamar during this year’s Fantastic Fest with Scream, Queen! My Nightmare on Elm Street directors Roman Chimienti and Tyler Jensen and documentary subject Mark Patton in attendance. Mark Patton also will attend the Fantastic Fest 35mm screening of A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge at 8 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 22 and 11:30 p.m. Sept. 24 at the Alamo South Lamar during Fantastic Fest.
