Written and directed by Beth B. Araya, and produced by Tamar Price, the Austin-shot short drama Yirga finds the eponymous young first generation East African-American woman (Rekik Neway) ready to move on to the next chapter in her life. But an encounter with two men about her cultural identity prompts her to fight back against her public shaming. Yirga will screen 8:15 p.m. March 8 at the Atom Theater at the Austin Convention Center, 11 a.m. March 10 at the AFS Cinema, and 11:15 a.m. March 16 at the Alamo South Lamar as part of the SXSW Film Festival’s Texas Shorts Program.
