Interview:
John Erler,
Master Pancake,
Frank Conniff,
The Mads
Let the movie mocking begin. The Mads—former Mystery Science Theater 3000ers Frank Conniff and Trace Beaulieu—return to Austin Nov. 8-10 to join forces with the MST3K-inspired Master Pancake to poke some harmless fun at two low-budget genre films from the 1980s. Master Pancake and The Mads will tackle Andy Sidaris’ girls, guns and g-strings classic Hard Ticket to Hawaii at 6:45 p.m. Nov. 8 before turning their attention to the Roger Corman-produced Magnificent Seven-inspired space opera Battle Beyond the Stars at 6:45 p.m. Nov. 9. The Mads also will join Master Pancake for the Choose Your Own Pancake shows at 9:45 p.m. Nov. 8 and Nov. 9. Each show finds Master Pancake and The Mads riffing on an audience-selected film. The Mads wrap up their time in Austin with the scripted movie riff The Mads Are Back at 7 p.m. Nov. 10. These five shows were originally scheduled in June but were postponed after Frank Conniff underwent quadruple bypass surgery. Mystery Science Theater 3000 founding member/writer Trace Beaulieu operated and voiced the Crow T. Robot puppet and played the role of mad scientist Dr. Clayton Forrester while Frank Conniff played Forrester’s lab assistant TV’s Frank. In addition to their weekly shows at the Alamo Ritz, Master Pancake can be seen riffing on Terminator 2: Judgement Day as part of the Alamo Drafthouse’s national preshow for Terminator: Dark Fate. Aired: Nov. 7, 2019.
