Interview:
Mike Looney, co-director, "The Big Shootout"
In 1969, the No. 1-ranked Texas Longhorns traveled to hostile Fayetteville, AR., to face the No. 2-ranked Arkansas Razorbacks in a televised game to determine college football’s national champion. With President Richard Nixon in attendance, the Longhorns came back from being down 14-0 to win the game 15-14. Directed by Mike Looney and George Francisco, the documentary The Big Shootout examines the political atmosphere that surrounded what would come to be known as “The Game of the Century.” The documentary includes interviews with former Longhorns coach Darrel Royal, quarterback James Street, and tight end Randy Peschler, as well as former Razorbacks coach Frank Broyles. The Austin Film Society presents The Big Shootout at 4 p.m. Feb. 16 at the Marchesa Hall and Theatre. Co-director Mike Looney will attend the screening along with Darrel Royal’s widow Edith and members of the 1969 Texas Longhorns, including defensive back Tom Campbell.
