Directed by his friend Malcolm Ingram, the SXSW Online entry Clerk examines the life and career of multi-hyphenate and Nerd culture godfather Kevin Smith. The documentary explores Smith's formative years in his native New Jersey; the success he enjoyed with his 1994 directorial debut Clerks; his highs and lows as a filmmaker; his relationship with producer Scott Mosier; his transition to a brand name and entrepreneur through his one-man shows and podcasts; and the aftermath of his 2018 heart attack. Malcolm Ingram previously directed the documentaries Phantom of Winnipeg, Southern Pride, Out to Win, and Continental. Kevin Smith served as an executive producer of Ingram's narrative features Drawing Flies and Tail Lights Fade and the documentaries Small Town Gay Bar and Bear Nation. Ingram also co-directed Oh, What a Lovely Tea Party with Smith's wife, Jennifer Schwalbach Smith. Clerk premieres 12 p.m. central March 17 during SXSW Online, which runs through March 20.
