Interview: Ryder McLaughlin, Gio Galicia, Sunny Suljic, Olan Prenatt, "Mid90s"
A coming-of-age drama that marks the directorial debut of Jonah Hill, Mid90s stars Sunny Suljic as Stevie, a lonely 13-year-old boy who finds a surrogate family in a group of skateboarders. Quickly dubbed “Sunburn” by his new and slightly older friends, Stevie relishes the independence that comes with being part of L.A.’s skateboarding community. But Stevie also sets down an accelerated path toward adulthood that leaves him vulnerable to the many temptations that L.A. offers. Sunny Suljic, who recently appeared in The House with a Clock in Its Walls, leads a young cast of unknowns that include Na-kel Smith, Ryder McLaughlin, Gio Galicia, and Olan Prenatt as the skateboarders Stevie befriends. The cast also includes Katherine Waterston as Stevie’s mother and Lucas Hedges’ as Stevie’s bully of a big brother. Mid90s premiered locally during this year’s Fantastic Fest and opened Oct. 26 in theaters.
