Interview:
Jon M. Chu,
director,
"Now You See Me 2"
Now You See Me 2’s Jon M. Chu is no stranger to stepping into a franchise in progress. He followed up his directorial debut Step Up 2 the Streets with Step Up 3D and G.I. Joe: Retaliation. Unlike those sequels, though, Now You See Me 2 isn’t a sequel masquerading as a soft reboot. Set a year after the events of the Louis Leterrier-directed Now You See Me, Chu’s sequel finds the Four Horsemen Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Dave Franco, and franchise newcomer Lizzy Caplan whisked off to Macau to unwillingly work their magic for Daniel Radcliffe’s nefarious tech billionaire. It falls on the Horsemen handler Mark Ruffalo to keep his grand illusionists out of harm’s way. Now You See Me 2 also sees the return of Morgan Freeman’s magic debunker and Michael Caine’s vengeful insurance magnate as well as the addition of Jay Chou’s man of mystery. Now You See Me 2 opens tomorrow in Austin. In addition to his franchise work, Jon M. Chu has directed Jem and the Holograms and music documentaries Justin Bieber: Never Say Never and Justin Bieber’s Believe. He is attached to direct Now You See Me 3.
