Interview:
Ike Barinholtz,
writer/director/star,
"The Oath"
Would you sign a loyalty oath to the United States at the request of a semi-authoritarian government? The “optional” decision to sign or not to sign such a document fuels the family feud at the heart of writer/director/star Ike Barinholtz’s dark political satire The Oath, which opened Oct. 19 in Austin. Barinholtz’s suburban father and husband Chris spends the Thanksgiving holiday bickering with his family about the social, political, and financial ramifications of signing “The Patriot’s Oath.” Events suddenly take a sinister turn on Black Friday, putting Chris’ anti-Patriot’s Oath stance to the test. The Oath also stars Tiffany Haddish as Chris’ wife Kai, Carrie Brownstein and Barinholtz’s real-life brother Jon as Chris’ siblings Alice and Pat, respectively, and John Cho and Billy Magnussen as government agents investigating Chris’ refusal to sign the Patriot’s Oath. The Oath represents the directorial debut of Blocker's star Ike Barinholtz, formerly of MADtv and The Mindy Project.
