"Faders Up:
The John Aielli Experience"
Directed by David Hartstein and Sam Wainwright Douglas, the documentary Faders Up: The John Aielli Experience celebrates the long and unique career of the KUTX radio host and iconic Austin personality. Faders Up traces the Killeen-raised classically trained pianist and singer's entry into radio in 1963 when he was a teenager, which eventually led him to KUT in 1966. For more than five decades, Aielli entertained Austin radio listeners with “Eklektikos,”a daily show initially devoted to classical music that evolved into six unpredictable hours of format-less radio featuring songs, interviews, and quirky asides. Aielli, who retired in 2020 following a stroke, sat down to discuss his life and career with Hartstein and Douglas in 2022, a year before he died. Faders Up: The John Aielli screens during the SXSW Film & TV Festival at 2:30 p.m. March 10 at the Paramount Theatre and at 11 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. March 13 at the Alamo South Lamar. The Austin-based David Hartstein previously directed Along Came Kinky …Texas Jewboy for Governor and produced Sister Aimee, Barracuda, The Honor Farm, and The Happy Poet as well as the documentaries Through the Repellent Fence, Fathers of Football, and The Sensitives. The Austin-based Sam Wainwright Douglas previously directed Through the Repellent Fence, Hot Grease, and Honky Tonk Heaven: Legend of the Broken Spoke. Posted: March 9, 2024.
