Interview:
Richard Stanley,
"Lost Soul"
Director David Gregory’s documentary Lost Soul: The Doomed Journey of Richard Stanley’s Island of Dr. Moreau chronicles the behind-the-scenes problems that prompted New Line Cinema to replace Hardware’s Richard Stanley with the veteran John Frankenheimer as the director of the 1996 adaptation of H.G. Wells’ 1896 sci-fi literary chiller. The result: one of the most notorious box office and critical disasters of the 1990s. In Lost Soul, Stanley discusses what inspired him to film Wells’ novel, his interactions with stars Marlon Brando and Val Kilmers, and the hurdles he fail to overcome even before filming began on location in North Queensland, Australia. The documentary also includes interviews with then-New Line Cinema CEO and chairman Bob Shaye, actress Fairuza Balk, and actor Rob Morrow, who was originally cast in the role of Edward Douglas that would eventually be played by David Thewlis. Lost Soul: The Doomed Journey of Richard Stanley’s Island of Dr. Moreau, which premiered locally at last year’s Fantastic Fest with Richard Stanley in attendance. The Austin Film Society will screen Lost Soul: The Doomed Journey of Richard Stanley’s Island of Dr. Moreau at 1:30 p.m. March 29)at the Marchesa Hall & Theatre.
