Interview:
Jeffrey Brown,
writer/director,
"Runaway Radio"
Produced by Austin-based filmmaker Jeffrey Brown, the documentary Runaway Radio chronicles the rise and fall and rise and fall of Houston’s beloved FM rock radio station, 101 KLOL. The documentary traces KLOL’s humble beginnings in 1970, as a progressive rock radio station that garnered a small but loyal listener base thanks to its free-form playlists, to its transition to an album oriented rock local and national phenomenon both celebrated and maligned for its outrageous on-air personalities and crazy giveaways. The documentary also focuses on the factors that led to 101 KLOL’s 2004 demise, which speak directly to how radio station ownership groups have homogenized the FM format and changed the listening experience often for the worst. Directed by Mike McGuff, Runaway Radio features interviews with many of 101 KLOL’s on-air personalities and key staff as well as the musicians who grew up listening to or developed strong bonds with the radio station, including Lyle Lovett, Sammy Hagar, Melissa Etheridge, King’s X’s Doug Pinnick, and the late Dusty Hill of ZZ Top. Runaway Radio will screen at 4:30 p.m. Dec. 9 at the AFS Cinema during Sound Unseen ATX 2023 music film festival. Jeffrey Brown previously produced Dance Hall Days, Battle for the Heart of Texas, Land of My Father, Cowboys, Nothing Stays the Same: The Story of the Saxon Pub, Dream With Me, Through the Repellent Fence, Vinyl Generation, No No: A Dockumentary, and Punk in Africa.
