Interview: Kat Candler,
writer/director, "Hellion"
Based on her 2012 short film of the same name, Austin-based writer/director Kat Candler’s Hellion focuses on the fractured relationship between a grieving widower (Breaking Bad's Aaron Paul) and his 13-year-old son (newcomer Josh Wiggins). Paul's Hollis Wilson is the father of two boys who drinks to numb the pain of losing his wife. Wiggins' Jacob' responds to his father’s emotional neglect by dragging his younger brother Wes (Deke Garner) around town with him as he causes all sorts of mayhem with his school friends. Things go from bad to worse when Wes is placed in the care of his Aunt Pam (Juliette Lewis). Hellion filmed last year in and around Port Arthur, and enjoyed its world premiere at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. The cast also includes Austin actor Jonny Mars, who played the father in the Hellion short film. Produced by Kelly Williams, Hellion will screen during the SXSW Film Festival at 2:15 p.m. March 9 and 7 p.m. March 12 at the Topfer Theatre at ZACH. Producer Kelly Williams joins writer/director Kat Candler during this interview.
