The Austin Youth Film Festival will be held 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 18 at the Alamo Drafthouse Mueller. The festival, dedicated to fostering a love of filmmaking among children of all ages, features 30 short films made by Austin-area middle school and high school students. Hellion director and former Queen Sugar showrunner Kat Candler will deliver the keynote address. Local filmmakers John Valley, Ya'Ke Smith, Jason Harter, and Keisha Zollar will participate in professional filmmaker roundtable conversations. Austin Youth Film Festival co-founder Carrie Cates is joined during this interview by filmmakers Ana Dragomir and Sadie Sweitzer. University of Texas Radio-Television-Film student Ana Dragomir directed the Austin Youth Film Festival/Alamo Drafthouse's “Don't Talk” PSA; Headwaters School student Sadie Sweitzer provided make-up for the PSA and co-directed Grounded, a documentary short about the Austin farm-based youth leadership organization Urban Roots.
