Breakthrough Artist Award Recipient
The All Genders, Lifestyles, and Identities Film Festival (aGLIFF) will honor writer/director Lisa Donato with the 2019 Breakthrough Artist Award. Donato, who splits her time between Austin and L.A., is now making the leap from making narrative and documentary shorts to writing and directing feature films. Donato co-wrote the 2017 same-sex romantic comedy Signature Move and is currently putting the finishing touches to her feature directorial debut, 2020’s family dramedy Gossamer Folds. Donato’s Gossamer Folds explores the friendship between Gossamer, an African-American transgender woman (Transparent's Alexandra Grey), and the young boy who moves next door, Tate, (It’s Jackson Robert Scott). The cast also includes Sprague Grayden and Shane West as Tate’s parents, Franklin Ojeda Smith as Gossamer’s father, Ethan Suplee as Gossamer’s best friend, and The Simpsons' Yeardley Smith as the owner of a bridal store (Smith also serves as one of the producers of Gossamer Folds). aGLIFF will screen Donato’s shorts Foxy Trot, The News Today, Spunkle, andThere You Are, and two episodes of her AOL.com show Behind the Drag, at 7 p.m. Aug. 23 at the Alamo South Lamar.
