Co-written and co-directed by former Austinite Laura E. Davis, the SXSW Film Festival entry Inheritance examines the strange dynamic that exists between a woman, her brother and her boyfriend. Hours after arriving for vacation in Belize, where she grew up as a child, Mara learns of the death of her father. She and her boyfriend Aaron travel to her childhood home in preparation of the funeral service. Mara’s brother Ben arrives upset that Mara never informed him of their father’s death. Things spiral downward quickly, with Mara losing control of her emotions and Aaron stuck keeping the peace between brother and sister. Inheritance co-writer/co-director Jessica Kaye stars as Mara, Mark Webber stars as Mara’s brother Ben, and Daniel Ahearn stars as Mara’s boyfriend Aaron. Inheritance co-writer/co-director Laura E. Davis, a former Austinite, previously wrote and directed the 2002 drama Thin Air. She also was a Michener Fellow in screenwriting at UT-Austin. Inheritance will screen during the SXSW Film Festival at 8 p.m. March 11 at the Alamo South Lamar, 6:30 p.m. March 13 at the Alamo Ritz, and 3:30 p.m. March 16 at the Alamo Ritz.
