Co-written and directed by Austin’s Christine Chen, the socially relevant supernatural chiller Erzulie chronicles a reunion between four friends in the Louisiana bayou that leads to their summoning of the eponymous Haitian mermaid goddess of love, strength, and power. But the women soon realize they are not the only ones seeking to exploit Erzulie’s magic for their own benefit. Erzulie’s cast is led by Leila Anastasia Scott as Erzulie and Courtney Oliviér, Elizabeth Trieu, Zoe Graham, and Diana Rose as the four friends out to change their lives and fortunes. Erzulie will screen multiple times in Austin in advance of its June 14 iTunes debut. The Erzulie Mermaid & Movies pool screenings will be held at 7 p.m. April 30 and 1 p.m. May 1 at Freestyle. Erzulie will also screen at 12 p.m. May 7 at the Austin Film Society, 7:30 p.m. May 7 at Kitty Cohen’s Bar, and 7 p.m. May 8 at the Austin Film Society. Christine Chen, who currently splits her time between Austin and L.A., previously directed Funemployment and the shorts Ya Albi, Not Your Ordinary Hero, Six Words, and Patience. She also has an extensive experience as an editor, producer, second unit director, and an assistant director, and served as the first assistant director on Jim Cummings’ Austin-shot Thunder Road.
