The Harry Ransom Center
Movie Poster Collection
What do you do when you own a vast collection of movie posters but you don’t have enough exhibit space to display them to the public? Catalog and post the posters online, of course. The Harry Ransom Center’s movie poster collection totals 10,000, spanning from the silent era to the 1970s, and comes in all shapes and sizes, including one sheets, window cards, and billboards. The center is currently digitalizing the posters, which hail from four commercial and private collections, most notably the now-defunct Texas-based Interstate Theater Circuit. Approximately 4,000 posters have been photographed and digitalized by digital project librarian Lauren Walker and graduate student assistant Jackie Mann, with 500 currently available to view online at the center’s website and more to be added over the coming year. Posters available for online viewing include Alfie, The Big Heat, Cinderella Liberty, Coffy, Dillinger, Finian’s Rainbow, Goodbye, Mr. Chips, Hell Up in Harlem, Kiss Me Kate, Lady Sings the Blues, Old Yeller, Peeping Tom, Scream Blacula Scream, Two for the Road, and Zulu.
