"Jakob's Wife"
In cowriter/director Travis Stevens’ small-town chiller Jakob’s Wife, a couple’s 30-year marriage faces its greatest test when one comes under of the influence of a malevolent being known as “The Master.” This reunion of genre icons Barbara Crampton and Larry Fessenden finds the former’s demure Anne Fedder undergo such a powerful physical and psychological transformation at the hands of The Master that she regains control of the life that she ceded years ago to her oblivious husband, Fessenden’s Pastor Jakob Fedder. Jakob, though, quickly becomes less concerned about the shift in power in his stale marriage to Anne than the potential threat The Master poses to their town. This SXSW Online Midnighter will be released in theaters and available for digital and on-demand viewing on April 16. Travis Stevens previously directed the 2019 SXSW Film Festival entry Girl on the Third Floor and produced Mohawk, 68 Kill, Buster’s Mal Heart, Starry Eyes, Cheap Thrills, and Barbara Crampton and Larry Fessenden’s We Are Still Here. Barbara Crampton became an instant horror favorite with her starring roles in director Stuart Gordon’s Re-Animator, From Beyond, and Castle Freak. Crampton’s comeback performance in 2011’s You’re Next revigorated her film career and positioned her the queen of independent horror over the past decade with Sacrifice, Puppet Master: The Littlest Reich, Dead Night, Death House, Beyond the Gates, Road Games, and the Into the Dark offering Culture Shock. Jakob's Wife premieres 8 p.m. central March 17 during SXSW Online, which runs through March 20. Aired: March 18, 2021.
