Interview:
Jade Halley Bartlett,
writer/director,
"Miller's Girl"
Representing the directorial debut of Jade Halley Bartlett, the psychological drama Miller’s Girl follows the problematic relationship that develops between Martin Freeman’s English teacher and published author Jonathan Miller and Jenna Ortega’s high school student and aspiring writer Cairo Sweet. Initially seeing himself as a mentor to Cairo, but obviously flattered by her attention, Miller gives a writing assignment to Cairo that he hopes will help her strengthen her college applications. But when Cairo chooses to write a short essay in the voice of Henry Miller, the reality and the fantasy behind the teacher-student relationship begin to blur in dangerous ways. Miller’s Girl also stars Dagmara Domińczyk as Miller’s partner Beatrice and Gideon Adlon as Cairo’s best friend Winnie. Miller’s Girl opened Jan. 25 in Austin. Jade Halley Bartlett wrote the first draft of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and helped punch up the script for the upcoming remake of Road House starring Jake Gyllenhaal.
