Diane Paragas,
writer/director,
"Yellow Rose"
Based on her 2017 short film of the same name, writer/director Diane Paragas' Austin-set music drama Yellow Rose follows the hardships faced by a teenage Filipina dreamer when ICE agents pick up and detain her undocumented mother in Bastrop. Rose (Broadway star and Grammy winner Eva Noblezada) takes refuge in Austin, where the aspiring country and western singer finds a mentor in singer-songwriter Dale Watson (playing a fictionalized version of himself). The cast also includes Lea Salonga, who plays Rose's Aunt Gail. (Salonga originated the role of Kim in Miss Saigon; Eva Noblezada received a 2017 Tony Award nomination for playing Kim in the Broadway revival). Yellow Rose, which premiered locally during the 2019 Austin Film Festival, opened Oct. 8 in Austin. Yellow Rose is now available for digital and on-demand viewing and will be release Jan. 5 on DVD. Raised in Lubbock, Filipino-American director Diane Paragas makes her feature film debut with Yellow Rose.
