Interview:
Kat Candler,
writer/director,
"The Rusted"
Austin-based director Kat Candler’s new short film The Rusted reunites The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2’s Josh Hutcherson and Jena Malone as siblings coping with their shared childhood traumas. Hutcherson blames Malone for leaving him in their care of their abusive mother, and he tries to exorcise his demons by renovating their mother’s ranch-house into a place he can call home. The Rusted is inspired by Mark Mukherjee's Tainted Water, Canon's Project Imagination: The Trailer contest winning entry. Kat Candler previously directed the features Hellion, Jumping Off Bridges, and Cicadas as well as the shorts Black Metal, Love Bug, Quarter to Noon, Roberta Wells, and The Absence of Wings. The Rusted will screen at the Blue Starlite Drive-In at Austin Studios after the Austin Film Society's 30th anniversary Make Watch Love Party ends at 10 p.m. Nov. 12.
