July and August 2021 Programming
Sixteen months after it closed due to the COVID-19 lockdown, the Austin Film Society’s AFS Cinema reopens July 15 with a retrospective screening of director Peter Bogdanovich’s The Last Picture Showin honor of the late Texas author and screenwriter Larry McMurty as well as Questlove’s new concert film Summer of Soul. July and August’s programming at the AFS Cinema is headlined by three series: The World of Wong Kar Wai, Eric Rohmer’s The Tale of Four Seasons, and The Best of Noir Canon. The AFS Cinema will also screen Austin-based director Keith Maitland’s documentary Dear Mr. Brody on July 17; Boyz N the Hood on July 28 and Aug. 2 with John Singleton biographer Mark D. Cunningham in attendance; Larry Cohen’s The Stuff on July 21 and 24 as part of the AFS Cinema’s Science on Screen series; and John Waters’ Polyester on Aug. 28, 29, and Aug. 31 in celebration of the director’s 75th birthday. Upcoming new releases include Rita Moreno: Just a Girl Who Decided to Go for It, The Witches of the Orient, and Without Getting Killed or Caught directed by part-time Austinites Tamara Saviano and Paul Whitfield.
