Alamo Time Capsules Series
Tonight, and every night in 2024, the Alamo Drafthouse is gonna party like it’s 1999. As well as like it’s 1994, 1989, 1984, 1979, and 1974. The new Alamo Time Capsules Series revisits some of big hits, mainstream and cult classics, art-house favorites, and influential and/or career-defining works by prominent directors that were released during the final 25 years of the 20th century, with a specific focus on six particular years in 5-year increments. The series, which launched at the beginning of January with a focus on 1999 at all 40 Alamo Drafthouse locations in the United States, will switch years every 6-to-8 weeks to highlight the cinematic achievements of 1994, 1989, 1984, 1979, and 1974. By turning the clock, the series allows viewers to compare and contrast the blockbuster mentality that Hollywood studios perfected in the 1990s against the auteur-driven New Hollywood film movement of the 1970s before Steven Spielberg’s Jaws irrevocably changed the film industry for matter and for worse. January and February’s 1999 selections include All About My Mother, Audition, Being John Malkovich, Deep Blue Sea, Election, Fight Club, Galaxy Quest, The Iron Giant, Jawbreaker, The Limey, The Matrix, Office Space, Run Lola Run, Rushmore, The Talent Mr. Ripley, and 10 Things I Hate About You. In addition, the Alamo Drafthouse Village celebrates its 50th anniversary with the retrospective series “Only at Village” that features films mostly from the Disney/Fox vault, including animated classics and the current Wes Anderson series. The Village, which joined the Alamo Drafhouse chain in 2001 as its second location, is also undergoing a remodel.
