Written and directed by Trey Edward Shults, Waves focuses on the trials and tribulations faced by the Williams, an African-American family living in the Miami suburbs. Shults' It Comes at Night star Kelvin Harrison Jr. plays high school wrestler Tyler, whose future is left in doubt when he receives some potentially devastating news. Lost in Space and Escape Room's Taylor Russell plays Emily, Tyler's younger sister who experiences first love at the most unexpected time.This Is Us' Sterling K. Brown and Hamilton Tony Award winner Renée Elise Goldsberry play Tyler and Emily's father Ronald and stepmother Catherine, respectively. Ronald and Catherine's seemingly perfect marriage is tested in the face of adversity. Waves, which premiered locally during this year's Austin Film Festival, opened Nov. 22 in Austin. Houston-born writer/director Trey Edward Shults, who attended Texas State University, made his directorial debut with the SXSW Grand Jury Prize-winning Krisha, which he shot in nine days at his parents’ home in Montgomery. The cast featured actors with Austin ties and family members, including his aunt, Krisha Fairchild. Fairchild and her Krisha costar Bill Wise also appear in Waves. Shults also wrote and directed the 2017 post-apocalyptic thriller It Comes at Night.
