The Austin Gay & Lesbian International Film Festival opens Sept. 8 with the coming-of-age documentary Real Boy and closes Sept. 11 with the documentary Kiki. Other highlights include the Centerpiece Film the documentary Political Animals; the narrative features include Arianna, Being 17, Closet Monster, Girls Lost, Jonathan, Paris 05:59, Spa Night, Summertime, and Women Who Kill; the narrative competition features Angry Indian Goddesses, Heartland, I Love You Both, Lazy Eye, and Retake; the documentaries Bright Shadows, Film Hawk, The Freedom to Marry, Gender Troubles: The Butches, Strike a Pose, The Trans List, and Uncle Howard; and the documentary competition films Check It, Free Cece!, Growing Up Coy, Memories of a Penitent Heart, and Two Soft Things, Two Hard Things. Films with Austin ties include Clay Liford’s comedy Slash and Walter Reuben’s fiction/non-fiction hybrid The Big Raincheck. There also will be anniversary screenings of The Watermelon Woman, with writer/director Cheryl Dunn in attendance, and Hedwig and the Angry Inch and Shortbus with writer/director John Cameron Mitchell in attendance. Finally, there will be a secret screening of a film to be released in 2017.
