Interview:
Mat Hames,
director,
"Becoming Jessica Nigri"
Directed by the Austin-based director Mat Hames, the Rooster Teeth documentary Becoming Jessica Nigri offers a portrait of the popular cosplayer and Internet personality. The documentary delves deep into how the formative early years the Nevada-born Nigri spent in New Zealand helped her foster an interest in art and a love of the outdoors. She sought solace in anime after returning to the United States and being bullied in high school for having an accent. She eventually discovered a passion for cosplay, which she parlayed into a large social media following and gigs as a promotional model and interviewer, among others. She also contributes the voice of Cinder Fall for the Roster Teeth animated series RWBY. Becoming Jessica Nigri tells her story as she struggles to make her dream costume, belonging to the godless Elune from the World of Warcraft, for the BlizzCon videogame convention. Becoming Jessica Nigri premieres Jan. 26 on Rooster Teeth’s streaming service FIRST. Mat Hames previously directed the documentaries Last Best Hope, When I Rise, What Was Ours Connected, The Tattooist, and Haus of Pain.
