Interview:
C. Robert Cargill,
co-writer,
"Dreamkill,"
"V/H/S/85"
Existing within the same cinematic realm as their previous chillers Sinister and The Black Phone, Austin-based screenwriter C. Robert Cargill and director Scott Derrickson’s V/H/S/85 found-footage segment “Dreamkill” finds Freddy Rodríguez’s police detective receiving videotapes of murders shot days before each one is committed. His investigation leads him to his partner’s son Gunther, whose psychic abilities allows him to record onto VHS the precognitive dreams he has of the serial killings. “Dreamkill” costars Scott Derrickson’s real-life son Dashiell Derrickson as Gunther and James Ransone as Gunther’s police detective father. Co-written by C. Robert Cargill and director Scott Derrickson, “Dreamkill” represents the first time the longtime creative partners have contributed to the V/H/S horror anthology franchise, which has spanned six found-footage installments since its launch in 2012. V/H/S/85, which premiered locally during this year’s Fantastic Fest, is now available to stream on Shudder. In addition, C. Robert Cargill will participate in a Q&A/book signing event at 6 p.m. Oct. 19 at Dragon's Lair. Sinister, the first collaboration between C. Robert Cargill and director Scott Derrickson, will screen at 7 p.m. Oct. 26 at the Violet Crown Cinema with Cargill in attendance. Released in 2012, Sinister stars Ethan Hawke as a true-crime writer who discovers Super 8 footage of the demonic killer Mr. Boogie in action over the course of decades. The Austin-based C. Robert Cargill also co-wrote Sinister 2, Doctor Strange, and The Black Phone with his writing partner and director Scott Derrickson. They also co-founded the production company Crooked Highway, which is in post-production on Derrickson’s next film, The Gorge, starring Miles Teller, Anya Taylor-Joy, and Sigourney Weaver. Cargill also wrote the novels “Dreams and Shadows,” “Queen of Dark Things,” “Sea of Rust,” and “Day Zero” as well as the short stories collection “We Are Where the Nightmares Go and Other Stories.” He also hosts the podcast Junkfood Cinema with Brian Salisbury.
