Director Vanessa Roth’s documentary The Texas Promise examines the current state of the Texas public school system. Among other issues, Roth looks at the impact of 2011’s $5.4 billion state budget cut to the education budget and the pros and cons of voucher programs and charter schools. Roth's previous documentaries include Aging Out, American Teacher, Taken In: Lives of America’s Foster Children, and The Third Monday in October. She also produced the Oscar-winning documentary short Freeheld. The Texas Promise will screen 7 p.m. Oct. 25 at the Bullock Museum IMAX Theatre and 6:30 p.m. Oct. 28 at the Rollins Theatre during the Austin Film Festival.
