Running May 17-19 at the Alamo Drafthouse Ritz, the sixth annual Noir City Austin 2019 film festival features 10 films—one from 1949, eight from the 1950s, and one from 1961—that show how the gradual dissolution of the Hollywood studio system impacted film noir. Noir City Austin 2019 begins May 17 with 1949’s Trapped and 1952’sThe Turning Point; continues May 18 with 1953’s The City That Never Sleeps, 1954’s Private Hell 36, Stanley Kubrick’s 1955’s Killer Kiss, and 1956’s A Kiss Before Dying; and closes May 19 with 1956’s Nightfall, 1958’s Murder by Contract, 1959’s The Crimson Kimono, and 1961’s Blast of Silence. Noir City Austin host and co-producer Eddie Muller is the founder and president of the Film Noir Foundation, which also runs the San Francisco Film Noir Festival. He also is the host Noir Alley, which airs 11 p.m. central every Saturday on Turner Classic Movies.
