Interview:
David Wexler,
director,
"Disintegration Loops"
Directed by David Wexler, the SXSW Online documentary Disintegration Loops offers an overview of the music of influential avant-garde composer William Basinski set against the 9/11 terrorist attacks and the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2002, the Texas-born New Yorker released the four ambient music albums that comprised "The Disintegration Loops," which won praise as an elegy for 9/11. In 2020, during the height of the pandemic, Basinski released his new album "Lamentations." Through virtual conversations with Basinski, Wexler chronicles the recording of "The Disintegration Loops" in July 2001 and the film Basinski shot on the evening of 9/11 that gave the project its significance. Wexler also examines "Lamentations" against the world-changing events of 2020. David Wexler previously directed the documentary Vigilante: The Incredible True Story of Curtis Sliwa and the Guardian Angels and the narrative features Last Supper, Anchors, Turtle Island, The Stand Up, and Evil Weed. Disintegration Loops premieres 12 p.m. central March 16 during SXSW Online, which runs through March 20. Aired: March 11, 2021.
