Directed by Tom Harper, the music drama Wild Rose stars Jessie Buckley as a Glaswegian single mother Rose-Lynn Harlan, who must choose between her two young children and her dream of becoming a country singer. Recently released from prison, Rose-Lynn struggles with the demands of parenthood as she tries to revives her singing career. Wild Rose also stars Julie Walters’ as Rose-Lynn’s no-nonsense mother Marion and Sophie Okonedo as Susan, Rose-Lynn’s employer and most vocal advocate. Wild Rose, which premiered locally during this year’s SXSW Film Festival, opened July 12 in Austin and will be available on DVD and for streaming beginning Sept. 17. Irish stage actress Jessie Buckley, who rose to fame in 2008 competing in the BBC talent show series I'd Do Anything, has appeared in the TV series Taboo, The Last Post, The Woman in White, and Chernobyl. She will next be seen in Renée Zellweger’s Judy, Benedict Cumberbatch’s Ironbark, and Robert Downey Jr.’s The Voyage of Doctor Dolittle. Tom Harper previously directed The Scouting Book for Boys, The War Book, The Woman in Black 2: Angel of Death, and the 2016 mini-series War and Peace, which costarred Jessie Buckley. Harper’s The Aeronauts, starring Eddie Redmayne and Felicity Jones, will open this December.
