Interview:
C. Robert Cargill,
co-writer/producer,
"The Black Phone"
Adapted from the Joe Hill short story by the Austin-based C. Robert Cargill and director Scott Derrickson, the 1970s-set supernatural chiller The Black Phone pits a teenage boy against his kidnapper, a child killer known as The Grabber. Trapped in a soundproofed basement, Finney struggles to plot his escape until he starts to receive calls on a disconnected rotary phone from the Grabber’s dead victims. At the same time, Finney’s younger sister Gwen endeavors to locate Finney based on the visions she experiences while asleep. The latest offering from Blumhouse Productions, The Black Phone stars Ethan Hawke as the Grabber, Mason Thames as Finney, and Madeleine McGraw as Gwen. The Black Phone, which premiered locally during last year’s Fantastic Fest, is now available for on-demand viewing and is still playing in Austin theaters. The Austin-based C. Robert Cargill co-wrote Sinister, Sinister 2, Doctor Strange, and The Black Phone with his writing partner, director Scott Derrickson. They also co-founded the production company Crooked Highway. Cargill also wrote the novels “Dreams and Shadows,” “Queen of Dark Things,” “Sea of Rust,” and “Day Zero” as well as the short stories collection “We Are Where the Nightmares Go and Other Stories.” The former film critic also hosts the podcast Junkfood Cinema with Brian Salisbury.
