Interview:
Iliana Sosa,
director,
"What We Leave Behind"
Austin-based director Iliana Sosa’s documentary What We Leave Behind offers a warm and affectionate portrait of her grandfather Julián Moreno during the final days of his life in his native Mexico. Sosa finds Julián, then in his late 80s, at home in rural Mexico, where he is building a new house for his family in the United States to use when they visit. A first-generation Mexican-American, Sosa delves deep into Julián’s life, the relationship they developed while living on different sides of the U.S.-Mexico border, their shared family history, and his hopes and expectations for his family after his passing. What We Leave Behind will screen during this year’s SXSW Film Festival at 6 p.m. March 11 at the Alamo South Lamar, 8:15 p.m. March 12 at the AFS Cinema, and 2 p.m. March 16 at the Alamo South Lamar. What We Leave Behind will also be available for SXSW Film Festival registrants to stream online for a 48-hour viewing period beginning at 9 a.m. March 12. Iliana Sosa is an assistant professor with University of Texas’ Department of Radio-Television-Film. Specializing in documentary filmmaking, Sosa previously co-produced Building the American Dream and co-directed the short An Uncertain Future. She also directed the 2013 narrative feature Detained in the Desert. Aired: March 10, 2022.
