"Calls to Okies:
The Park Grubbs Story"
We have all either made or suffered through prank phones call. But none compare to the prank calls made in the 1980s by bored teenagers in the quiet Oklahoma city of Bartlesville. They gained an underground following as a result of their taped phones calls being passed on from one generation to the next under the name of Park Grubbs. Fans include Oklahoma natives and Austin-based directors Bradley Beesley and Ben Steinbauer, whose short documentary Calls to Okies: The Park Grubbs Story examines the circumstances that led these teens to make their prank calls and the legacy that they created. Beesley previously directed Sweethearts of the Prison Rodeo while Steinbauer previously directed Winnebago Man. Calls to Okies: The Park Grubbs Story will screen 6:30 p.m. March 21 at the Alamo South Lamar as part of the SXSW Film Festival Documentary Shorts Competition package. Aired: March 19, 2015 Web sites: https://www.kickstarter.com/ and http://sxsw.com/film |
