Sundance Film Festival 2018 Report
While all eyes were on Hollywood on Jan. 24 for the announcement of this year’s Academy Awards nominations, the film industry’s heavy hitters and newcomers were holding court in Park City, Utah, for the Sundance Film Festival 2018. This is the first Sundance Film Festival of the #MeToo era; accused sexual predator Harvey Weinstein is as synonymous with the festival as any filmmaker. This year’s film festival several entries with Texas ties, including the Austin-based Zellner brothers’ western Damsel starring Robert Pattinson. In addition, film distributor Neon, cofounded by the Alamo Drafthouse’s Tim League, has picked up four films during the festival: the revenge saga Assassination Nation; the police-brutality tale Monsters and Men, the thriller Revenge and the documentary Three Identical Strangers. The festival also serves as a possible preview of films that will be screened at various Austin film festivals over the course of this year, including Keira Knightley’s Colette; Paul Rudd’s The Catcher Was a Spy; Kristen Stewart’s Lizzie; Nicolas Cage’s Mandy; and director Gus Vant Sant’s Don’t Worry, He Won’t Get Far On Foot.
