July 2023 Programming
The Austin Film Society kicks off its July 2023 programming at the AFS Cinema with the film diary series You're My Greatest Treasure: 10 Exercises in Intimacy and continues with the John Doe Noir Weekend, hosted by the X singer, songwriter, and musician and featuring the original 1950 version of D.O.A. and Doe's new black-and-white remake. The AFS Cinema will also welcome producer Carolyn Pfeiffer, who will present three films she has worked on in various capacities--The Leopard, Dancehall Queen, and the Austin-shot Roadie—in conjunction with the publication of her autography "Chasing the Panther: Adventures and Misadventures of a Cinematic Life." New releases include Stay Awake. Retrospective screenings include Chocolat,The Elephant Man, The Green Ray, Last of Sheila, Paprika, and Raging Bull as well as the Lates selections Red Sun, Spacked Out, and Vase de Noces. The Queer Cinema: Lost & Found series brings Pumping Iron II: The Women to the AFS Cinema. Austin-based director Ben Steinbauer will screen his 2010 documentary Winnebago Man in honor of its subject Jack Rebney, who died in May 2023.
