Interview:
Jalmari Helander,
writer/director,
"Sisu"
Sisu is a Finnish concept that author Joanna Nylund describes as “stoic determination, hardiness, bravery, tenacity, and resilience” in the face of incredible adversity. With his World War II thriller Sisu, Finnish writer/director Jalmari Helander applies this homegrown philosophy to a goldminer forced to do battle with German soldiers retreating from Finland in 1944. SS Obersturmführer Bruno Helldorf (Aksel Hennie) may have a tank and a military unit under his command but he makes the fatal mistake of stealing gold from prospector Aatami Korpi (Jorma Tommila). Nicknamed Koschei, or “the Immortal,” Korpi’s a fearless lone wolf warrior and mythical national hero who killed 300 Russians during the Winter War of 1939 and 1940. And he is not about to let any Nazi scum flee Finland with his gold, even if he kills him in the process. Sisu opened April 28 in theaters. Finnish filmmaker Jalmari Helander previously directed Rare Exports and Big Game, which both starred his Sisu lead Jorma Tommila. Aired: April 25, 2023.
