Interview:
Stephen Jannise,
Paramount & Stateside Theatres film programmer,
July 2021 programming,
46th Annual Paramount Summer Classic Film Series
Do not expect to find Austin’s neo-poseur types hanging out in coffee shops on July 13. Instead, they will be hanging at the Paramount Theatre for the 30th anniversary screening and reunion of director Richard Linklater’s influential independent classic, Slacker. As part of the Paramount Summer Classic Film Series’ July 2021 programming, and in collaboration with the Austin Film Society, Linklater and Slacker cast and crew members will gather to discuss the 1991 mediation on life, politics, and Madonna’s pap smear that launched Linklater’s long and storied directing career, pushed Austin and its evolving arts scene into the national consciousness, defined the spirit of Generation X for better or for worse, and gave independent cinema of the 1990s a major boost. The rest of the Paramount Summer Classic Film Series’ July and early August’s programming includes screenings of 2001: A Space Odyssey and Lawrence of Arabia as well as programs devoted to the Paramount’s most popular musicals, political and sports underdogs, and films nominated for Best Screenplay.
