Interview:
Ellar Coltrane,
"By the River"
Directed by Kevin Ford, By the River follows actor Ellar Coltrane’s journey by train from his hometown of Austin to Northern California, with stops in El Paso, New Mexico, Colorado, Utah, and Nevada, among others. The nonfiction film finds Coltrane engaging in deep conversation with the people he meets on the train or on the street about their life, beliefs, and feelings about the current state of United States. By the River is as much about traveling and connecting with strangers on a very personal level as it is about Coltrane’s journey within. Ellar Coltrane and director Kevin Ford will attend the Austin Film Society of By the River at 7 p.m. July 2 at the AFS Cinema. Ellar Coltrane grew up before our eyes thanks to his role as Mason Evans Jr. in Boyhood, which writer/director Richard Linklater shot between 2002 and 2013. He most recently appeared in the Barack Obama biography Barry and director James Ponsoldt’s adaptation of The Circle opposite Emma Watson and Tom Hanks. He will next be seen in Dog Years, opposite Burt Reynolds, as well as Shoplifters of the World and Blood Money. He also just completed Drowned, his second collaboration with By the River director Kevin Ford.
