"Saloum"
Directed by Jean Luc Herbulot, the Senegalese folklore-inspired genre-bending thriller Saloum follows the efforts of three mercenaries (Yann Gael’s Chaka, Roger Sallah’s Rafa, and Mentor Ba’s Minuit) to smuggle a Mexican drug dealer safely out of Guinea-Bissau during the 2003 military coup of the West African country. When their plane runs out of fuel, the mercenaries seek temporary solace at a secluded resort on the Saloum Delta in Senegal. The mercenaries quickly realize that things are not what they seem at a sanctuary hidden deep within a region immersed in mysticism. Saloum screens 6:30 p.m. Sept. 30 at the Alamo South Lamar during Fantastic Fest. The Senegal-based Jean Luc Herbulot previously directed 2014’s Dealerand created the Netflix supernatural cop series Sakho & Mangane, which starred Saloum’s Yann Gael. Herbulot is currently in post-production on the thriller Zero. He and Saloum cowriter/producer Pamela Diop founded Lacme Studios in Senegal. Note: Saloum premiered Sept. 8, 2022 on Shudder.
