Interview:
Paul Feig,
writer/director,
"Spy"
Spy’s Paul Feig has made a name for himself as a director who enjoys making female-fronted comedies that happen to star Melissa McCarthy and do big business at the box office. Spy represents the third collaboration between Feig and McCarthy following 2011’s Bridesmaid and 2013’s The Heat. McCarthy stars as Susan Cooper, a bored CIA analyst who seizes the opportunity to undertake a dangerous mission to stop the sale of a nuclear weapon. The ensemble cast includes Jason Statham and Jude Law as CIA operatives and Bridesmaids' Rose Byrne as a Bulgarian arms dealer they’re tasked with finding. Having cut his teeth his cut in TV as an actor, writer, and director, Feig transitioned to feature films with the 2003 drama I Am David and the 2006 teen comedy Unaccompanied Minors. He will unite with McCarthy and Bridesmaids’ Kristen Wiig for next year’s Ghostbusters reboot. Spy premiered locally at this year’s SXSW Film Festival and opened June 5 in theaters. Spy writer/director Paul Feig spoke with members of the media during this year’s SXSW Film Festival.
