Directed by part-time Austin married couple Tamara Saviano and Paul Whitfield, Without Getting Killed or Caught chronicles the relationship between the influential Americana singer-songwriter Guy Clark and artist-songwriter Susanna Clark. The documentary examines the marriage and the careers of the Clarks while also detailing their deep and lasting friendship with another Texas icon, Townes van Zandt. Based on both Susanna Clark’s diaries and Tamara Saviano’s 2016 book “Without Getting Killed or Caught: The Life and Music of Guy Clark,” the documentary includes interviews with such friends and collaborators as Rodney Crowell, Steve Earle, Vince Gill, and Jo Harvey Allen. Without Getting Killed or Caught also features Sissy Spacek reading excerpts from Susanna Clark’s diaries. Representing the directorial debut of Tamara Saviano and Paul Whitfield, who split their time between Austin and Nashville, Without Getting Killed or Caught will premiere at 10 a.m. March 18 during SXSW Online. In addition to writing “Without Getting Killed or Caught: The Life and Music of Guy Clark,” Tamara Saviano published the memoir The Most Beautiful Girl: A True Story of a Dad, a Daughter and the Healing Power of Music. She has also produced albums for Kris Kristofferson and Shawn Camp as well as the 2011 Guy Clark tribute album “This One’s For Him.” She won a Grammy as co-producer of the 2004 Stephen Foster tribute album “Beautiful Dreamer.” Paul Whitfield is a video engineer-in-charge for major concert tours. Post-SXSW Online virtual screenings of Without Getting Killed or Caught will be held March 23, April 8, 16, 18, 22, and 25. An in-person screening of Without Getting Killed or Caught will be held May 19 at Laguna Gloria in Austin. Aired: March 11, 2021.
