"The Last Video Store"
Based on their 2013 Fantastic Fest short of the same name, directors Cody Kennedy and Tim Rutherford’s horror comedy The Last Video Store chronicles the mayhem caused by a possessed VHS tape. Nyla gets more than she bargains for when she returns her father’s late rentals to Blaster Video and unknowingly hands the corrupted cassette to the store’s owner, Kevin. When he plays the tape, Kevin unleashes an evil that transports psychopathic characters and malevolent creatures from some of his favorite direct-to-video films into the video store. Trapped without nowhere to go, Nyla and Kevin are forced to fend off their grade-Z movie foes until they can come up with a way to destroy the video nasty that wants them dead. Yaayaa Adams plays Nyla; Kevin Martin, the real-life owner/operator of The Lobby video store in Edmonton in Alberta, Canada, plays Kevin. The Last Video Store screens at 11 p.m. Sept. 22 and at 5:10 p.m. Sept. 25 at the Alamo South Lamar during Fantastic Fest. Physical media aficionados Cody Kennedy and Tim Rutherford, who make their feature-film directorial debut with The Last Video Store, previously contributed the segment “M is for Magnetic Tape” to ABCs of Death 2.5.
