Interview:
John Gholson,
lead actor,
Bryan Connolly,
writer/director,
"Make Popular Movies"
Hollywood’s age-old practice of putting commerce before art comes under intense scrutiny in writer/director Bryan Connolly’s Austin-shot filmmaking satire Make Popular Movies. John Gholson stars as Lou Bagetti, a blockbuster-minded director hired to make yet another unwanted version of Robin Hood. Connolly pokes fun at every aspect of the making and the theatrical release of Bagetti’s aggressively mainstream Robin Hood, from the casting process to shooting to post-production to its awards campaign. Make Popular Movies also stars Katie Graham as an indefatigable member of Bagetti’s production team, Zack Carlson as an obnoxious big-time Hollywood producer, and Franny Harold, Nathaniel Hendricks, and Carlos Larotta as actors cast in Robin Hood. Make Popular Movies will screen at 1 p.m. April 2 at the AFS Cinema, where the film’s opening scene was shot. Make Popular Movies represents Bryan Connolly’s directorial debut. He also co-wrote two short films directed by Todd Rohal, The Suplex Duplex Complex and Hunky Boys Go Ding-Dong. He served as the manager of the now-closed Vulcan Video and edited with Zack Carlson the 2010 book Destroy All Movies!!! The Complete Guide to Punks on Film. John Gholson previously appeared in such Austin-shot features as Blood Relatives, Lucky Doug, Ultimate World, Maybe Shower, Slash, Meet Me There, Zero Charisma, and My Sucky Teen Romance as well as the short film The Suplex Duplex Complex. He is also a member of the Austin Film Critics Association.
