"Deathgasm"
Release Date: Oct. 9, 2015
Rating: R Running Time: 86 minutes Poking fun at the heavy metal Satanic Panic of the 1980s, the New Zealand horror comedy Deathgasm pits several high school headbangers against the demon they accidentally summon through song. Writer/director Jason Lei Howden channels his inner Peter Jackson—the Peter Jackson of the Bad Taste, Meet the Feebles, and Dead Alive, of course—to offer a splatter-errific tale of heavy metal comic mayhem. Deathgasm is as gleefully cheeky as it is bloody and gory. But it’s all in the name of good fun. Heck, one fight even finds Milo Cawthorne’s long-haired hero employing a sex toy against the possessed. As nutty as Deathgasm is, though, Howden skillfully captures the awkwardness that comes with being a misunderstood teenage social misfit. Rock on, Deathgasm.
