![]() Pioneer journalist. Press spokeswoman for Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson. Press secretary for First Lady Lady Bird Johnson. Political activist and advocate for the Equal Rights Amendment. Proud native Texan and longtime Austinite. Liz Carpenter lived a long and full life, one dedicated to breaking the glass ceilings that existed for women in journalism and politics in wartime and post-World War II America. Carpenter’s legacy is explored with warmth and affection in Shaking It Up: The Life and Times of Liz Carpenter, a documentary directed by her daughter Christy Carpenter and Abby Ginzberg. The documentary traces Carpenter’s early career as a White House correspondent for the Austin-American Statesman followed by her transition into politics, working first for Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson and then for First Lady Lady Bird Johnson. The documentary also details the post-White House political activism Carpenter undertook beginning in the 1970s through to her 2010 death in Austin. Shaking It Up: The Life and Times of Liz Carpenter screens during the SXSW Film & TV Festival at 6 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. March 13 at the Violet Crown Cinema. Austin-based Christy Carpenter makes her directorial debut with Shaking It Up: The Life and Times of Liz Carpenter.
