"Raging Grace"
Inspired by the poor treatment of Filipino nurses working in the UK during the COVID-19 pandemic, and informed by his mother’s immigrant experiences cleaning houses when he was a child, Filipino-British writer/director Paris Zarcilla’s supernatural chiller Raging Grace follows the efforts of an undocumented Filipina immigrant desperately trying to secure UK citizenship for herself and her London-born pre-teen daughter. Played by Filipina actress Max Eigenman, Joy agrees to be paid under the table as a live-in caregiver to a terminally ill old man (David Hayman). But the position requires Joy to sneak in her daughter Grace (Jaeden Paige Boadilla) into the old man’s mansion and passed his snooty and niece (Leanne Best). At first, Joy just has to deal with the niece’s demands and microaggressions. But then she and Grace discover nothing is quite what it seems with the old man and his niece. Raging Grace will screen during the SXSW Film & Film Festival at 1 p.m. March 12 at the Alamo South Lamar, 1:45 p.m. March 14 at the Alamo South Lamar, and 3:45 p.m. March 17 at the Stateside Theatre. Paris Zarcilla makes his directorial debut with Raging Grace, which is produced by Chi Thai. The British- Vietnamese producer is committed to promoting British East and Southeast Asians in the British film industry.
